Wolves were the centre of attention during the recent January transfer window after Adama Traore made the move to his old club Barcelona on loan until the end of the season.

Now that the winter market has come to an end, it seems as though history could repeat itself again for the Old Gold in the summer, with another of their key players being eyed up for a potential Molineux exit to Spain.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from Hespress, Sevilla are tracking the situation of Wolves centre-back Romain Saiss, with a potential summer transfer swoop in their sights.

The 31-year-old joined Wolves back in 2016 from French club SCO Angers and has since gone on to make 196 appearances for the Old Gold across all competitions, chipping in with 15 goals and three assists, a decent return for a defender.

Labelled a “tower of strength” in December by Danny Murphy, the centre-back – who is currently earning £28k-per-week according to Salary Sport – has started 21 of Wolves’ 23 league games so far this season.

This season has also seen the Moroccan prove just how important a figure he is for Bruno Lage’s side by earning himself an overall performance rating of 7.02/10, making him Wolves’ third-highest rated player according to WhoScored.

In addition to his overall performances, Saiss has also averaged more clearances per game (five) than any other Wolves player in the league this season, along with the joint-highest average for interceptions per game alongside Toti Gomes (two). That shows just how vital he has been for the team at the back and partly explains why they have such an impressive defensive record this term.

Lage would be furious

With all that in mind, it would be safe to assume that Lage would not be happy to see the defender leave this summer. Therefore, the Molineux hierarchy should probably do their best to convince Saiss to sign a new deal before his current one expires at the end of the season, in order to ward off any interest from Sevilla or any other club.

If Wolves don’t offer the Moroccan a new deal and he ends up joining another club in the summer, this could spell disaster for Jeff Shi and the team if they don’t manage to secure a reliable replacement.
