Former England defender Danny Mills claimed that “good players get away with so much” when asked about Alfredo Morelos’ situation at Rangers.

The 23-year-old was granted permission to return to Colombia last week as he was suspended for the club’s Europa League clash with Braga.

Morelos returned late, though, and was therefore dropped from the squad for Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Hearts in the Scottish Cup.

Mills was asked whether the Gers would consider cutting their losses and potentially selling the South American at the end of the season.

The pundit, though, claimed that “good players get away with so much”, suggesting that Morelos’ importance to Rangers makes his conduct less of an issue.

Mills told Football Insider:

“Good players get away with so much. If they are performing, good players can get away with an awful lot more than the average player or a player that is not playing well. That is life.

“That is if you are a football player, a rugby player, a businessman… No matter what. If your top salesmen is being ill-disciplined but he is making you fortunes are you going to sack him? You are not.

“Luis Suarez is the perfect example. I would have been straight out of the door! There gets to a point where it becomes too disruptive, like with Paul Pogba.

“If great players push it too far then it starts to become an issue and I think Rangers are thinking, ‘Where are we at with him?’”

Morelos, who arrived at Rangers from HJK Helsinki in July 2017, has found the back of the net on 29 occasions in 43 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side during the 2019/20 campaign, in addition to providing 10 assists.

The forward has a contract at Ibrox until the summer of 2023, meanwhile, showing that the Gers are in a strong position when it comes to any potential negotiations over a possible exit.

Meanwhile, Chris Sutton had this to say on Rangers’ latest defeat.
